How to Care for Succulents and Cacti — The Complete Beginner's Guide

Succulents aren't as low-maintenance as people think. Sunlight matters more than watering frequency. Here's everything you need to know.

The reputation of succulents and cacti as "impossible to kill" is misleading. They do forgive missed waterings — but they absolutely demand bright light. Get that wrong and no amount of careful watering will save them.

Light Is Everything

Succulents need at least 6 hours of bright light daily. Without it, they stretch and lean toward the light source in a process called etiolation — the plant becomes weak, pale, and distorted. A south-facing windowsill is ideal. If you can't offer that, use a grow light.

The Correct Watering Method

The key phrase is "soak and dry." Water deeply until it drains from the bottom, then let the soil dry completely before watering again. In spring–summer, that's roughly every 2–3 weeks. In autumn–winter, once a month (or less) is sufficient.

Soil and Pot Selection

Use succulent/cactus mix or blend standard potting soil 50/50 with perlite for fast drainage. Terracotta pots are ideal because they're porous and help the soil dry faster. Avoid glazed ceramic or plastic pots if you tend to overwater.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

During rainy seasons, you can skip watering entirely — outdoor humidity and indirect moisture are often enough for succulents.
