Indoor Herb Garden — 7 Herbs You Can Grow in Your Kitchen

Fresh herbs at your fingertips, year-round. Here's how to set up a thriving kitchen herb garden even if you've never grown food before.

A windowsill herb garden is one of the most rewarding things you can grow indoors — fresh flavor on demand, pleasant fragrance, and the satisfaction of eating something you grew yourself.

7 Best Herbs for Beginners

Essential Requirements

Most herbs need at least 6 hours of direct or bright indirect sunlight daily. A south-facing windowsill is ideal. Without enough light, growth slows and flavor becomes weak. A grow light on a timer is an excellent alternative.

Watering and Pots

Most herbs prefer soil that dries out slightly between waterings. Use pots with drainage holes — waterlogged roots kill herbs fast. Mint is the exception: it likes consistently moist soil and benefits from more frequent watering.

How to Harvest

Never harvest more than one-third of the plant at once. Cut from the top, above a leaf node, to encourage bushy new growth. Harvest before the plant flowers to keep leaves flavorful — once herbs bolt, the leaves turn bitter.

Group herbs with similar water needs. Rosemary, thyme, and oregano are all Mediterranean herbs that love dry conditions and pair perfectly in the same pot.
